About this weekend

This event is organized by the National Network of Pastoral Musicians. All are welcome. If you canÕt come for the whole weekend, Saturday 19 July is an open day of workshops, worship and song.

The National Network of Pastoral Musicians  was set up in July 1996. It  is an informal group of people of many denominations whose aim is to meet to learn from each other and experience prayer and music in common. We are delighted to be at Worth Abbey, a place of prayer and welcome to all seekers for God.

A wide range of workshops on music and worship has been arranged, there will be times of prayer and song, and a keynote address on Music in the Mission of the Church. This was the topic of the first Conference in 1996, and we are delighted to have the original speakers reunited this year. Three representatives of different denominations (Catholic, Presbyterian and Anglican) were invited to address the topic, in presentations which were later published in a booklet which is still available. Two are speaking today, the third (Andrew Maries) on Sunday.

The NNPM organizes a conference every two years and issues a newsletter, Accord, three times yearly. Area Secretaries gather information about local events in the music and worship fields,  and these are publicised through Accord.

Music in the mission of the Church - revisited

Workshops

Sunday morning showers and weight-loss through music John Bell

A workshop about teaching congregations music, from a master of the craft. Here are some of the things you will learn, besides what the workshop title means:  What ÔtrainedÕ musicians need to forget : What untrained people easily remember: How to turn the organ off : How to turn the people on.  A workshop for everyone, no matter whether you are habitually a teacher or one of the taught. John Bell of the Wild Goose Resource Group is a composer, preacher and writer

READY FOR ANYTHING  Martin Foster,  Stephen Dean. Do you have music for any liturgical occasion? For a baptism at Sunday Mass or a funeral in Eastertide?  For the communion procession in Advent? The Catholic Bishops of England and Wales  are drawing up a ÔDirectoryÕ, not an approved list of songs but a way of making sure we can choose music for any time the liturgy demands it.The presenters are members of the St Thomas More Group, composers and writers.

Ancient-Future Worship: Combining Old and New Richard Hubbard. This workshop explores practical ideas for bringing together contemporary and historic worship music in the same act of worship. Draw on a rich variety of music to creatively transform your congregational worship. Richard Hubbard is a Lecturer in Music and Worship at London School of Theology, a teacher of piano and percussion, and a Director of Music & Worship Foundation and Cantus Firmus Trust.

NEW MUSIC FOR LITURGICAL SEASONS Michael Joncas. One of the USAÕs best exports is its liturgical music, and Michael Joncas has contributed greatly to this repertoire. In this workshop he gives us a taste of the continuing flow of music from across the Atlantic, including what he has written since a recent incapacitating illness. Music for Advent/Christmas, Lent and Eastertide. Michael Joncas is Associate Professor of Theology at the University of St Thomas, St Paul, Minnesota

SINGING THE LORDÕS SONG IN A STRANGE LAND  Andrew Maries. ÔSinging the Lord's song in a strange landÕ - all the music we use is communicating a message about culture, values and lifestyle, in fact about us!  At a time when the Church is very concerned about mission, what kind of music should we be using? Andrew works for the Keynote Trust, offering help in music and worship matters across denominations and worship styles.

Designing an act of worship (What is GOPIA?)  Gary O'Neill. Gary is working on a book for publication which looks at how a group of people can design an act of worship together. This could be a service designed from scratch, or for a particular part of a Mass or other rite. The method he uses, GOPIA, works for all occasions from a house group, or small evening prayer, to a service for thousands. Come along to this workshop to see how it works and obtain your copy of the GOPIA method to use in your own community. Gary O'Neill is the Director of Studies for Ordinands in the Anglican Diocese of Chester and a Tutor on the South Northwest Training Partnership

Praying and Celebrating Through Music  Margaret Rizza. The workshop will start with body and vocal warmups. We will then work on technical and musical aspects as we sing through examples of praying through music such as chants, celebratory songs, a hymn for peace and the Gloria from ÒBroken for YouÓ. Margaret Rizza is a teacher of singing, composer and retreat leader

PLAY IN THE MYSTERY: DRUM AND CHANT Philip Roderick.  Improvise with the divine in the mystery of creation; rekindle the body and spirit through percussion and song. Bring  cardboard boxes, rattles, shakers, yourselves into this simple but profound soundspace. Philip will facilitate improvisational chant and play the cardboard box, the djembe and the extraordinary and ambient Hang Drum.  Philip Roderick is an Anglican priest, founder-Director of The Quiet Garden Movement and leader of Contemplative Fire - a Ôfresh expression of ChurchÕ.  www.contemplativefire.org

IN THE BEGINNING: THE WORDS Mag Shepherd. 'Now into your care these words are givenÕ, says Deuteronomy. When we decide what to sing in worship it is not the beauty of the sound which should be our main guide, but the words (GodÕs  not ours) we put on peopleÕs lips. How to choose music that will convey these words, and how to communicate its meaning, are the aims of this practical workshop.. Mag Shepherd leads the music in Dockhead RC parish just by Tower Bridge in London.

How can we keep from singing? Christopher Walker. Music, they say, is the shortest route from the heart to the head. As ministers of music we are in the privileged position of helping people get close to God in good times as well as bad. In this workshop we will explore different styles of words, music and forms that enrich the singing Church. Chris is a composer and pastoral musician who lives in Los Angeles
